Overview: As owner operator of Total Control Inc I have been managing turf and athletic fields for over 2 decades. In that time I have gained an understanding of what considerations should be made in order to have an effective management program. I have experienced much of what others read about.
Turf Management: Turf management starts with evaluating soil and turf conditions and identifying those elements creating negative impact on turf establishment, health and vigor. Once the limiting factors have been identified, applications and procedures are established and prioritized to not only achieve the anticipated results but also to fall within budgetary restraints
Infield Management: Effective infield management starts with identifying site specific limitations, budget considerations, level of maintenance and intensity of usage. With these factors in mind, a plan to achieve the highest "possible" level of safety, playability and durability is developed.
Reconstruction Specifications: Reconstruction Specifications for baseball / softball infields start with identifying existing problems, previous design flaws and the field usage needs. Once this is accomplished a plan is developed that addresses these concerns while keeping a keen eye on site specific considerations and limitations.
I have witnessed many projects that solve one problem while creating another. It is important to undertake reconstruction projects with a clear understanding of what is expected. That means what is expected of the contractor, what is expected from the client and what is expected from the finished project.
Every infield has its own set of problems based on level of maintenance, budget, intensity of play and original design. After 20 years of experience I can evaluate these criteria, and develop a plan specific to the site.
Turf and Infield Materials: I am not a material salesman. I have nothing to gain based on what materials are used. My responsibility is to recommend products I feel best accomplish the objectives. It is also my responsibility to educate you, the client to be sure you have a clear understanding of the benefits and limitations of each product recommended. My favorite scenario is the salesman that recommends the same infield mix used at XYZ professional baseball stadium. If your level of maintenance , your level of play and your budget are not comparable to XYZ stadium maybe you don't want that infield mix.
